Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a form of scarring on the skin caused by tearing of the dermis, the layer of tissue that supports the skin and when it tears, the skin stretches out of proportion to leave a visible stretch mark.

Stretch marks occur for a variety of reasons and the most common cause is from the rapid stretching of the skin during periods of rapid growth and weight change.  The most obvious, of course is from pregnancy, but stretch marks may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with puberty, bodybuilding, hormone replacement therapy, etc.

Medical terminology for these kinds of markings includes striae atrophicae, vergetures, stria distensae, striae cutis distensae, lineae atrophicae, linea albicante, or simply striae.

Stretch marks are often formed during pregnancy, usually form during the last trimester, and usually on the belly, but they also commonly occur on the breasts, thighs, hips, lower back and buttocks and are known as striae gravidarum. They can even form due to weight-lifting and some sports.

Surgical treatments for stretch marks, include dermabrasion, chemical peels and laser surgery. The results maybe successful, but they are variable and depend largely on age, general health and skin condition.

Eating well; a skin-friendly diet with foods rich in vitamins A and C, zinc and protein. Oily fish, nuts, carrots and eggs. Your skin loves these foods, and you'd do well do make them a regular part of your diet, for healthy skin and great complexion. If any foods will reduce the formation of stretch marks, it's these.
