Paracetamol

A very popular over the counter medication that was discovered in 1893 and became available by prescription only, in 1956, and then as an over the counter medicine in 1963 and it is now one of the most widely used pain relievers, however used excessively it can cause liver damage and should not be used by people with liver disease.

The active ingredient is Paracetamol is also known as acetaminophen - Technical - Paracetamol is 4-acetamidophenol.

Panadol is a brand name for Paracetamol and in stores is more expensive than unbranded Paracetamol.

Aspirin

A very popular over the counter medication used as a temporary relief from aches, pains, inflammatory and feverish states and now commonly used as a preventative for some illnesses including heart disease.

Excess use causes a breakdown of the stomach and the digestive process and some users may experience allergic reaction.

Aspirin is a synthetic formula based on compounds found in the inner bark of willow trees with the compound name "acetylsalicylic acid". It was trademarked as Aspirin« in 1899 and is also marketed as Dispirin in some countries.

AP Codeine

A once very popular medication used to relieve mild to moderate pain developed after opium and heroine were outlawed and codine is typically a combination of acetaminophen and the narcotic drug codeine. Codeine acts on certain centers in the brain to reduce pain and acetaminophen increases its effectiveness.

Acetaminophen and codeine is an excellent analgesic combination for mild to moderate pain relief and is ofen prescribed in the aftermath of minor surgery, as well as a wide array of other situations that call for stronger pain management than aspirin or paracetamol.

Side effects may include Nausea, vomiting, constipation, light headedness, dizziness, drowsiness, flushing, vision changes, mental or mood changes and codeine addiction.

In America, there are other brand names including capital with codeine, phenaphen with codeine, tylenol with codeine, margesic and codeine and probably others.
