L-Arginine
L-Arginine, also just called
Arginine, has appeared in many products of the past
couple of years, gaining popularity as a
nonprescription treatment for high cholesterol and as
an active ingredient in sexual support products like Mycreme and Her Turn.
L-arginine is a
non-essential amino acid which is abundant in
protamines and histones, these are proteins
associated with nucleic acids.
L-arginine is used
by the immune system to help regulate the activity of
the thymus gland, which is responsible for
manufacturing T lymphocytes. (These are the T-cells,
which assist the immune system and body defences).
For this reason it may be a very useful nutrititional
supplement for people suffering from AIDS and other
diseases which suppress the immune system.
In the pancreas it is used to
release insulin, in the pituitary gland, it is a
component of human growth hormone.
It is important in liver health
and assists in neutralizing ammonia in the liver,
while it is also involved in the skin and connective
tissue, making it important for the healing and
repair of soft tissue, the formation of collagen and
in the building of new bone and tendons.
It is required in muscle
metabolism and helping with weight control since it
facilitates the increase of muscle mass, while
reducing body fat.
L-Arginine also creates nitric
oxide in the human body (nitric oxide is one of the
most essential substances which influence sexual
function in both men and women), and helps to improve
circulation. and maintains the nitrogen balance.
L-arginine is found in seminal
fluid and is used in the treatment of male sexual
health problems and treatments for sterility.
L-arginine and
Sexuality
It is used in sexual stimulants, as people
report longer and more intense orgasms when their
intake of arginine is increased.
In Men, L-Arginine improves
blood flow to the genital area and gives
erections that are harder, bigger, last longer
and can be more frequent.
In Women, causes a higher
blood flow which makes the clitoral and vaginal
tissues more sensitive and responsive to sexual
stimulation. This way, L-Arginine increases the
possibility for women to reach orgasm.
Deficiency is rare but
signs may include impaired insulin production as well
as possible hair loss.
Toxicity & Symptoms of High
Intake are also rare, but symptoms of massive dosages
may include thickening and coarsening of the skin,
muscle weakness, diarrhea, nausea, as well as
increasing the activity of some viruses. For this
reason people suffering from herpes should avoid high
dosage. Pregnant and lactating women and people
suffering from schizophrenia should also avoid high
dosage. (when ingested, it is unlikely that topical
use would cause health problems).
Arginine pyroglutamate, in
addition to having cognitive enhancing effects, is an
excellent growth hormone releaser because it is
carried more efficiently across the blood- brain
barrier than arginine alone. In Italy, this form of
the amino acid is used to treat senility, mental
retardation, and alcoholism. Arginine pyroglutamate
is an arginine molecule combined with a pyroglutamate
molecule. L-Arginine alone does not produce cognitive
enhancing effects.
L-arginine is found in:
whole-wheat, rice, nuts, seeds, corn, soy, grapes,
coco, carob and some other foods. It can be purchased
from pharmacies and is an active ingredient in many
sexual support products.
