Poisons in Our Foods and Environment
Excel Toothpaste - WARNING
June 15th 2007
The
Chinese-made Excel toothpaste - also sold as Dr Cool and Mr Cool toothpaste -
has been taken off shelves around the world over the past months after
it was found to contain small amounts of
the industrial chemical di-ethylene-glycol which is typically used as a solvent
or coolant and is believed to be responsible for the deaths of 300 people in
Panama last year*.
The New Zealand Ministry of Health is warning consumers who have bought any brand of Excel toothpaste not to use it and is further calling on consumers to avoid
all toothpaste imported from China -
but in the absence of any requirement for country of origin labelling on
toothpaste, or any other food products, how are consumers supposed to work out
whether their toothpaste comes from China or anywhere else?
The NZ government is one of the last governments in the world to react to this
problem that became internationally public on May 19th 2007. We agree with Ms
Kedgley from the NZ Green Party who says, “The vague and desultory
requests from the Ministry of Health are not sufficient, and it’s time for an
immediate recall, a far stricter testing regime, and country of origin labelling.”
As well as Excel toothpastes, di-ethylene-glycol has
been found in cough syrup, fever medication and injectable drugs. This means
that all consumables from China cannot be trusted, but how do you know where
anything is from without country of origin labeling? Even the store owner may
not know where he buys product through a distribution company.
How is this happening?
There is a great deal of corruption in China and other countries where in this
case counterfeiters have substituted a more expensive syrup (usually glycerin)
with the sweet-tasting solvent.
The Chinese government of course is not happy and
The former head of the country's state food and drug administration has been sentenced to death for accepting bribes to approve hundreds of drugs, some
of which have led to the deaths of patients in China and around the world.
To avoid this happening to you and your family, you must know what you use and
consume.
