Natural Medical And Healing Systems > Herbal or Botanical Medicine
Herbal or Botanical Medicine is
the use of herbs for disease prevention and restoration of
the body and it's immune system as a primary intervention
treatment for specific conditions.
Herb plants produce and contain a
variety of chemical substances that act upon the body. The
prescription of specific herbal treatments is an individualised
process, since herbalism takes into account not only a person's
illness or condition, but also lifestyle factors.
Herbs and other plants have been used
as medicines in most cultures and civilisations throughout history,
either as single entities or as complex mixtures of several herbs or
of herbs and other substances.
Today they are the basis for many
modern Western medicines. Herbal medicine is a major component in
indigenous peoples' traditional medicine and a common element in Ayurvedic,
homoeopathic, naturopathic and traditional oriental
medicine.
